Good music is hard to come by in this very inconveniently placed town that is Boulder. Sure, we have Denver….but what artist in their right mind travels way out of their way to tour in one of the lamest cities of all time? Very few. Or just people who have bad booking agents. When a group worth seeing gets conned into visiting this far off land, nothing can stop me.
CocoRosie. You either love em’ or want to smack em’. It should be obvious by how many of their videos are posted here that I love them. I want to pinch their cute rosie cheeks and throw fairy dust at their feet. Bianca “coco” Casady and Sierra “rosie” Casady are strange, beautiful, twisted chameleons. Sierra’s operatic voice swirls chills up your spine and Bianca’s jazzy playfulness yanks you back down to the ground. Their bizarre lyrics, vocals and ethereal presence are hypnotizing. When I saw them last week at The Gothic Theatre, I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to dance or just stand very still, so as to make studying them a bit easier.
Not once did CocoRosie speak to the audience, which was a little unnerving… but super mysterious. I am a “lazy” music fanatic, which means that I rarely research the facts and history of my favorite artists. So I kept wondering, “where are these people from? Why won’t they let us hear their normal talking voices? Holy crap! They have got to be from Paris! Yes yes. Definitely European.” Bingo…that’s exactly what CocoRosie wanted us to believe. But I know their dark little secret. The only accent they have is from the mid-west of the U.S. of A. Although, they are tricky little buggers, I couldn’t love them more.
